7-Dehydrostigmasterol and ergosterol: the major sterols of an amoeba.
نویسندگان
چکیده
The sterol fraction of Acanthamoeba (Neff) contains 60% 7-dehydrostigmasterol and 40% ergosterol. The sterols were characterized by infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy, gas chromatography, specific reactions, and mass spectral analysis. Sterols constitute 5% of the lipids and 15% of the neutral lipids in this species.

Phylogenetic Distribution of Fungal Sterols
BACKGROUND Ergosterol has been considered the "fungal sterol" for almost 125 years; however, additional sterol data superimposed on a recent molecular phylogeny of kingdom Fungi reveals a different and more complex situation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS The interpretation of sterol distribution data in a modern phylogenetic context indicates that there is a clear trend from cholesterol and...
متن کاملNystatin-induced lipid vesicles permeabilization is strongly dependent on sterol structure.
The selectivity of the antibiotic nystatin towards ergosterol compared to cholesterol is believed to be a crucial factor in its specificity for fungi. In order to define the structural features of sterols that control this effect, nystatin interaction with ergosterol-, cholesterol-, brassicasterol- and 7-dehydrocholesterol-containing palmitoyloleoylphosphocholine vesicles was studied by fluores...
متن کاملSterol metabolism in the filasterean Capsaspora owczarzaki has features that resemble both fungi and animals
Sterols are essential for several physiological processes in most eukaryotes. Sterols regulate membrane homeostasis and participate in different signalling pathways not only as precursors of steroid hormones and vitamins, but also through its role in the formation of lipid rafts. Two major types of sterols, cholesterol and ergosterol, have been described so far in the opisthokonts, the clade th...
متن کاملRelationship between polyene resistance and sterol compositions in Cryptococcus neoformans.
Six mutants of Cryptococcus neoformans resistant to nystatin and pimaricin and three mutants resistant to amphotericin B were isolated by ultraviolet irradiation techniques from two wild-type strains. The major sterols of the wild-type strains were Delta(7)-ergosten-3beta-ol and ergosterol. All six mutants resistant to nystatin and pimaricin showed either loss of ergosterol and concurrent produ...
متن کاملConversion of ergosterol to 22-de-hydrocholesterol in Blattella germanica.
The literature suggests that several species of insects can convert Czs and Czs sterols to cholestane derivatives. According to Bergmann (l), cholesterol is the major sterol constituent (85%) and the plant sterol sitosterol a minor component of chrysalis oil obtained from the silkworm Bombyx mori, although this insect feeds exclusively on mulberry leaves. More recently, Bergmann and Levinson (2...
